Mokṣa

Mokṣa मोक्ष

Mokṣa is the highest goal of a human life. Mokṣa is a key concept in Yoga, where it is a state of awakening, liberation and freedom in this life.

Mokṣa means spiritual liberation, release, liberation from the bondage to the world (from the cycle of births) because through the inner union with the highest self, the earthly karma is erased.

The state of Mokṣa is like the wave in the ocean with the state of consciousness that recognises inherent universal and divine reality and loses all sense of separateness from the ocean.

To have realised Mokṣa is to have awakening, liberation from the I-thought/ I-centredness or ego, realisation of the truth, liberation from the bondage of impulses aroused by sense impressions, attainment of the eternal, pure reality of the Self and getting rid of changeable, unreal, matter-related consciousness .

The individual soul (jīvin) that has lost the consciousness of its origin regains the knowledge of its own reality of being in the state of Mokṣa, thus completing the circle of evolution.
Mokṣa is seen as a final release from illusion, and through knowledge of one’s own fundamental nature, which is Satcitananda, a state of knowledge, peace and bliss.

The person who experiences complete liberatrion during life is called Jīvan Mukta (Jīvan = soul, Mukti = liberation).

Mokṣa can be attained through the path of devotion (bhaktiyoga), the path of knowledge (jnanayoga) as well as the path of selfless deed (karmayoga).

„Always do good to others. Be selfless. Mentally remove everything. This is the divine life. This is the direct way to Mokṣa.“ – Sri Swami Sivananda
